Partnering with Dementia Australia

Heartland has partnered with Dementia Australia to support the great work that they do in promoting healthy ageing.

Dementia Australia is the national peak body for people living with dementia, including their families and carers. They work tirelessly to bring notice to this important health issue – especially as Australia’s ageing population increases.

Dementia Australia

What is Dementia?

Dementia is a term used to describe the symptoms of a large group of illnesses (such as Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia and Lewy Body disease) which cause a progressive decline in a person’s functioning, including memory, intellect, rationality, social skills and physical functioning.

In Australia, dementia is the second-leading cause of death – and without a cure, it will become the leading cause of death within five years. Dementia claimed more than 13,000 Australia lives in 2016, of which 64.4% were female, which made it the leading cause of death among women.

In 2017, Ipsos Australia conducted a survey which found that more than eight out of ten people were unaware of dementia’s deadly status and almost 40% said they didn’t know it could be actively managed.
