Partnering with Dementia Australia
Heartland is proud to help seniors live a better retirement, with independence and dignity, through our reverse mortgage. As part of this commitment, we have partnered with Dementia Australia to support the great work that they do in promoting healthy ageing.
What is dementia?
Dementia is a term used to describe the symptoms of a large group of illnesses, which cause a progressive decline in a person’s functioning, including memory, intellect, rationality, social skills and physical functioning.
Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia and Lewy Body disease are all forms of dementia.
In Australia, dementia is the second-leading cause of death. It claimed more than 13,000 Australia lives in 2016. 64.4% of those were female, which made it the leading cause of death among women.
Within five years, without a cure, dementia will become the leading cause of death in Australia.
In 2017 Ipsos Australia conducted a survey which found that more than eight out of ten people were unaware of dementia’s deadly status and almost 40% said they didn’t know it could be actively managed.
413,000 people are estimated to currently be living with dementia and, without a significant breakthrough in medicine, that number is estimated to rise to as high as 1.1 million people by 2056 on the back of an ageing population.
About Dementia Australia
Dementia Australia is the national peak body for people living with dementia, including their families and carers. They work tirelessly to bring notice to this important health issue - especially as Australia’s ageing population increases.
Heartland’s commitment to customers
